During the reign of Emperor Jahangir, Sir Thomas Roe and Captain Hawkins visited the Mughal Court to secure commercial privileges. Sir Thomas Roe, an English diplomat, and Captain William Hawkins, a naval commander, were sent by the East India Company to negotiate trade agreements and secure favourable terms for English merchants in the Mughal Empire. Their visits to the Mughal Court in the early 17th century were part of the broader efforts by European powers to establish and expand trade relations in the Indian subcontinent.
